The Right Start Youth Program
Schooling for our youth has changed so much. They are preparing our children for the future – college and a career down the road but what about today? What about the everyday needs they have right now? The simplicities of the past have been forgotten. Typing, home ec, wood shop, marketing, the things we treasured when we went to school and those simple things that we hoped to pass down to our kids. The things we prayed our youth would have instilled on them have been wiped from the curriculum as “unnecessary skills” for their careers. However, what we are forgetting is that their careers are only a part of them. As a human being, they must have other skills – knowing how to cook a meal, learning how to hang a mirror and coming home at winter break with the inevitable wood rocking horse. Plus, simple skills like how to actually put their hands on the keyboard to effectively type rather than watching their fingers punch one key at a time, or giving a speech or oral report in front of a classroom and communicating on the phone beyond using two fingers for texting to their friends while using emojis and social media slang. Most of these things were taught in middle and high school classes, and are now a lost art. Completely gone from the curriculum.
Communication
A few months ago, my own daughter had fear of picking up the phone and calling an art school to ask questions about their college program. She didn’t know how to communicate to them. She didn’t know how to hold an actual conversation and the first thing she asked me was if she could send an email instead. Of course I said NO! If she can’t pick up the phone and make a call to another human being, have I failed as a parent on one of the simplest skills of our time? But then I thought about it. Who taught me those skills? Was it just something I learned on my own? Did I just know how to do or did I learn it in school or from my parents? I guess it was a combination of things. But, I definitely recalled my communication class in high school gave me most of my skills, plus the etiquette from my parents filled in the gaps.
Interviewing
So, it’s time for me to step up to the plate and do what is not being done for our kids anymore. And, most parents don’t have the time, the resources or the know-how to do what needs to be done with regards to getting them into the real world and helping them find their first job! How do we get our kids to the same place we were at this age? Yes, they definitely are light years ahead of us with technology, I will give them that! However, they do not even come close to having the everyday skills that we did when it comes to holding a conversation or conducting a proper interview -

- talking to adults in person

- how to properly shake hands (or even knowing that they should do so)
- how to ask the right questions in an interview
- walking in with a resume (and not just filling out the questionnaire that is provided, if they even know how to fill that out!)
